Turia Pitt is a national treasure. She’s an Australian who has overcome unimaginable challenges and emerged from her experience a true inspiration.
After suffering burns to 60% of her body in a bushfire whilst running an ultra marathon race in 2011, Turia had to relearn how to talk, walk and undertake basic tasks. She continues to inspire Australians every day with the outlook she has on life and the way in which she chooses to live every day.
We were lucky enough to have Turia Pitt as one of our keynote speakers at FILEX 2019 where she shared some of the wisdom she has learned along the journey from the valley floor surrounded by flames, to her recovery in hospital and everything she has achieved since.
Like most people in the fitness industry, Turia now spends her time trying to help and inspire others to improve their lives – she does regular speaking events and has also written three books on her experience.
The incident has made Turia look at her day completely differently. She believes self care is important – that means getting up every day and asking “what would make today great?” Whether that means going for a surf or a run or spending time with your partner or kids, she believes in having a full bucket in order to be able to give to others. She also believes in slowing down, reflecting and savouring the successes as they come rather than just asking “what’s next?”
Have you gone through a period in your life where you’ve thought “poor me”? Any one of us can have a life changing experience that can turn our lives upside down, but to reinvent yourself and reinvent your life; Turia thinks “that’s where the magic is”. The most important message she has learned is simple but powerful – consistency trumps motivation every time.
