Matt Church on Filling Your Own Cup | FILEX 2019 Highlights
Matt Church isn’t just any ordinary motivational speaker. In 2001, Matt founded ‘Thought Leaders’ a business education service focused on giving back and building on the idea that great leaders create great leaders. This premise was a huge theme for his keynote talk at our 2019 FILEX Convention where Matt focused on the importance of filling your own cup first.
It’s something that is often overlooked in the fitness industry, however, Matt made some interesting points about how looking after ones-self through restoration, education and community is more important than ever in this period of change.
‘I think that is is important that instructors have a place that is for them, that is not for the commercial agenda of the studio they belong to or school of thought they participate in and I feel like FILEX is that.’ says Matt.
Matt’s strength in foresight has allowed him to anticipate the disruption of the fitness industry to bring about a more holistic and integrated approach to health, wellness and fitness. While it is important for instructions to be educated and certified, it is almost no longer enough for leaders in the fitness industry to focus solely on one area. Education and training is important, says Matt, and he encourages ‘non-stop learning’ to allow for fitness leaders to prepare for the change and to help shape the future of the industry.
‘The future is going to require people to be more integrated and holistic, and if I was in this industry I would pretty much be non-stop learning new things,’ says Matt.
Matt agrees FILEX provides the opportunity to expand your mind and horizons by attending sessions you wouldn’t normally. It is also a great place for instructors to “fill up their up cup” by soaking up the sheer energy in the room which gives you a moment to settle back, expand your brain and recharge your batteries again.
The importance of ensuring the community feels welcome and supported throughout their health and fitness journey have begun to extend beyond the parameters of traditional gyms and studios, and the shake up means instructors are forced to have a more holistic and educated approach to their training. It’s definitely an exciting time to be part of the fitness industry, that’s for sure!
